On Friday Sept. 8, 2017, Howard County Commissioner Paul Wyman walked a Kokomo Tribune photographer through the county's new work release facility, formerly the old jail, on Berkley Road, showing off the progress that has been made since a construction bid was approved in early August.
The program is expected to begin around New Year's, and will kick off as a male-only program operating with roughly 80 beds. And if the county receives additional grant money -- $608,000 was granted to the county in April from the Indiana Department of Correction -- a female work release program could be up and running by late 2018 to early 2019.
Wyman has said previously that the program will initially utilize two dorms on the facility's second floor. A female expansion would utilize a pod on the first floor, he said.
